The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.  Prov 1:7

Proverbs is sometimes called a wisdom book.  It is said to be Solomon who asked God for Wisdom, and became a very rich and powerful king blessed by God.

The first 6 verses in Proverbs Solomon is extolling all that knowledge and wisdom afford and then he ends with the key,  The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.

No matter how much we read, how much we study, or how much we better ourselves, according to Solomon the first step is to understand our position.  The first step to wisdom is obedience.  When we listen to God’s wisdom we see many things

Prov 10:27 The fear of the Lord prolongs life, But the years of the wicked will be shortened
Prov  14:26 In the fear of the Lord there is strong confidence, and his children will have refuge
Prov 19:23 The fear of the Lord leads to life, so that one may sleep satisfied, untouched by evil
Prov 22:4 The reward of humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, honor and life.

The repeating theme is one of humility and surrender.  When decide to give our lives to God and let him be in charge, instead of ourselves, we are blessed with a life that can only be described as one of wisdom.

We quit reacting and acting selfishly, we quit putting ourselves first and are better listeners, and we become teachable.

The opposite is also true,  Fools despise wisdom and instruction.

So the wisdom of Solomon comes down to this.  Knowledge is gained by knowing that God is God, and I am not.

Prov 3:6  In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
